Battery life still tops the complaint charts for smartphone owners tired of the daily charging routine. Even though smartphone batteries are growing bigger with every passing year, we're not seeing a huge benefit because our Android devices are demanding more and more out of them.

No one really wants to be told that the most obvious route to increased battery life is to use your phone less or worse: turn off some of the features that enticed you to buy it in the first place. So, we've pulled together a list of 10 simple ways to increase the battery life of your Android smartphone.

Use power saving mode

Most Android device manufacturers have added some form of power-saving mode in their smartphones. You can automatically hobble your phone's features or shut down specific apps when the battery dwindles below a predetermined level.

Stock Android only offers battery stats for now, but Android Lollipop has a battery saver option built in (which means most phones running Android 5 will too in the future). If you can't find a power saving.

Automate your phone

You don't need your phone syncing away through the night, so why not introduce a bedtime routine that automatically silences it and kills your data and Wi-Fi connections? With apps like AutomateIt and Tasker, you can also automatically turn things on and off based on triggers and rules you define.

Uninstall or disable apps

Delve into Settings > Apps and flick over to the 'All' tab to find a complete list of your apps. Anything in the list that you don't use is a candidate for the uninstall pile. In their infinite wisdom, manufacturers sometimes block you from uninstalling their apps, but you usually have the option to disable them instead, and it's worth doing.
Hibernate or freeze apps

You may also consider installing Greenify to get a good look at what is running and automatically hibernate apps that you aren't using, so they aren't eating system resources unless you start them up.

You'll need to root your device to really take full advantage, which is simple enough but will take a little time to manage if you're new to the process. If you do decide to root then you may also consider Titanium Backup Pro for freezing unwanted apps.

The busier your home screen, the more battery life it's going to suck. Get rid of widgets that you don't need, and consider reducing refresh rates. Animation costs power, so ditch the live wallpapers.

If you have a phone with an AMOLED display (such as nearly all of the high end Samsung Galaxy models or the new Moto X), then use a dark background for the home screen and a dark theme in general. The technology achieves deep blacks by not lighting up those pixels and so dark backgrounds can save you some power.
Tweak display settings

Your screen brightness is going to have a big impact on your battery. Don't rely on auto-brightness because it will generally be set higher than you really need. Reduce brightness manually and keep it as low as is comfortable. You can always pull down the notification shade and tweak it quickly via the quick settings when you have to.

You should also reduce the screen time out in display settings under sleep. The faster your Android device fades to black when not in use, the more power you'll save.

Turn off vibrations

When it comes to Android phones and tablets, vibrations can be an unnecessary battery killer. Fortunately, you can control it manually.

Start with haptic feedback for key presses. You'll usually find the option to turn 'Vibrate on keypress' off in Settings > Language & Input in the options for the keyboard you are using. You could also turn off 'Sound on Keypress' for extra saving.

You can also go into Settings > Sound and turn off 'Vibrate when Ringing'. You'll find a Vibrate option that you can turn off in your SMS app settings as well.
Turn off notifications

Do you need to know every time someone likes a post or comments on something you've engaged with on Facebook? Do you want to hear about the latest special offer or new app in your notification shade?

When you install any app, it automatically gains the right to fire notifications at you, but you can stop it in Settings > Apps by tapping on the app and clearing the 'Show Notifications' box
Turn off GPS

Go to Settings > Location and you can see which services and apps are trying to track you. Switch the mode to lower accuracy or just turn it off and you can save a lot of power.





Nokia launch An iPad named N1

What looks like Apple’s iPad Mini, but has better specs, is considerably cheaper, and runs a stock version of Android 5.0 Lollipop? The new Nokia N1 tablet, apparently. At just $250 with 32GB of storage — as opposed to the iPad Mini 3’s base price of $400 for the 16GB model — the Nokia N1 is definitely priced to sell.
Just yesterday, Nokia — as in the networking equipment company that wasn’t acquired by Microsoft — announced that it would be licensing the Nokia name to device makers. Today, it seems Chinese electronics giant Foxconn is the first company to take up that offer with the Nokia N1 Android tablet.

The Nokia N1 bears a striking resemblance to the iPad Mini. It has the same 7.9-inch 2048×1536 screen, the same bezels, the same anodized aluminium unibody chassis, and very similar camera, button, and headphone jack placement. Even the bottom of the N1 looks like an iPad Mini, with two speaker grilles flanking a small, central port. (Incidentally, that port on the bottom of the N1 is one of the first reversible USB Type-C connectors, not Apple’s Lightning connector.)
There’s also no home button, nor any chamfered edges — but curiously, the N1 is slightly lighter (318 grams vs. 331 grams) and thinner (6.9 mm vs. 7.5 mm) than the iPad Mini 3. In terms of raw hardware specs, the Nokia N1 and Apple’s iPad Mini 3 are fairly similar. The N1 is powered by a quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 SoC (Bay Trail/Moorefield) which should compare favorably with the iPad Mini’s A7 SoC, or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805. The N1 has an 8-megapixel camera on the back, vs. 5MP for the iPad Mini 3 — and its WiFi goes up to 802.11ac, rather than the Mini’s rather ghetto 802.11n. The iPad Mini 3 does have a larger battery than the N1, however. We have no idea how these spec differences will play out in practice, of course, but on paper at least the Nokia N1 is pretty hot — especially priced at $250, some $150 cheaper than the iPad Mini 3.

Other than price, the main difference is that the Nokia/Foxconn N1 runs a stock version ofAndroid 5.0 Lollipop — stock, that is, except for the inclusion of Nokia’s newfangled Z Launcher app. Z Launcher, according to Nokia, is a very simple app launcher that “adapts to you.” It shows the apps that you’re likely to open — and for other apps, you can “scribble” the app’s first letter on the screen (“u” would bring up Uber, “i” would bring up Instagram, etc.) The launcher is available on Google Play today for Android smartphones, but for tablets it’s exclusive to the Nokia N1 (it’s meant to be a sweetener).
The Android tablet space is an interesting one. On the one hand, the Galaxy Note line of tablets and phablets has been well received — and of course, Amazon’s cheap-and-cheerful Kindle Fire tablets appear to sell quite well. On the other hand, though, Android tablets clearly aren’t a hit in the same way as the iPad and iPad Mini. The Android tablet market has always given off a slight air of immaturity, probably because there has never been a stand-out device that has inspired users and developers to take the segment seriously. Maybe the N1, with stock Android 5.0, is that tablet?

The Nokia N1 will go on sale in China in or around February 2015, priced at around $250 (before taxes). It will then roll out to some countries in Europe and Russia. No word on whether it’s coming to the US — but given now the Nokia brand is much more recognizable/valuable on that side of the Atlantic, I wouldn’t be surprised if the US has to wait a long time.

Five of India's most popular small cars have failed crash tests conducted by a UK-based car safety watchdog.
The tests by Global NCAP showed that if involved in a crash, fatalities or serious injuries could result.
Among the cars tested was India's talismanic Tata Nano, the world's cheapest car, as well as models made in India by Ford, Volkswagen and Hyundai.
The cars were apparently stripped of safety features to make them cheaper for Indian buyers, correspondents say.
The five models accounted for 20% of all sales in the country last year. Estimates say that about 80% of the cars sold in India have price tags of under $8,000 (£4,800).
"It's worrying to see levels of safety that are 20 years behind the five-star standards now common in Europe and North America," said the head of NCAP Global, Max Mosley, the former chief of international motorsport.
Those car manufacturers who have spoken out since the safety tests have insisted that safety is of paramount importance and that they will be reviewing the NCAP's test results.
Airbags left out
The car safety watchdog put five models through crash tests, including the Suzuki-Maruti Alto 800, the Tata Nano, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen Polo.
None of these entry-level cars sold in India is fitted with airbags. They also lack the safety standards that the same models have when sold in North America and Europe, according to the watchdog.
"Poor structural integrity and the absence of airbags are putting the lives of Indian consumers at risk. They have a right to know how safe their vehicles are and to expect the same basic levels of safety as standard as customers in other part of the world," Mr Mosley added.

Coinciding with the Global NCAP tests, Volkswagen has decided to withdraw the non-airbag version of the Polo from sale in India and replaced it with a version which has two airbags

As a result of the tests, Volkswagen has withdrawn its Polo model without airbags.
Volkswagen also said the airbags, as well as anti-lock brakes, would become standard from 1 February along with a 2.7% price increase to offset the costs, the Associated Press (AP) news agency reports.
"We are proud to be leading the cause of driver safety," Arvind Saxena told AP.
A Ford spokesperson told the BBC: "Safety is one of the highest priorities in the design of our vehicles. Our vehicles consistently meet or exceed applicable industry safety standards.
"We are monitoring the progress of this review and will work with Indian authorities, GNCAP and the other relevant stake holders as appropriate."
Tata has said it is looking at the Nano's structure for ways to improve its strength, having already added power steering and other features, AP adds.
India's growing middle class has helped fuel a massive boom in car sales but they are also always looking for a good bargain, the BBC's Sanjoy Majumder in Delhi reports.
But India also has more road accident deaths than any other country - put down to bad roads, poor driving but also, it appears, unsafe cars.
Every year, tens of thousands of people are killed on the country's roads and the numbers have been rising steadily - nearly 140,000 people were killed in 2012, according to the government's National Crime Records Bureau.
According to NCAP, it is estimated that 17% of these deaths are of car passengers.

Facebook is adding new settings that give users more control over their news feeds.
(CNN)-- Facebook is giving its users more control over the posts and people they see most in their news feeds.On Friday, the company announced new filters in Settings that show the people, pages and groups you follow that posted the most in the past week, along with a summary. If you "unfollow" someone in the heat of the moment and decide you miss their cat photos, bring up the list of recently un-followed people and add them back into your feed.
There are also new controls so users
can opt to see fewer posts from a person or a page (instead of just un-following them outright).
Giving more power to its users is a smart move for the social network. Facebook has taken a lot of heat for controlling what people see and when they see it.
Instead of a straight chronological list of posts from friends and family, the company uses algorithms to show an edited feed. Posts it deems more important, like major life events, are bumped to the top. Sometimes day-old stories are resurfaced. It also looks at your behavior, what posts you like and pages you follow to decide what content to show you.
With an average of 864 million people looking at their news feed every day, that's a lot of power. The company was accused of unethically experimenting on almost 690,000 users' news feeds in 2012 (the news broke in June). It tinkered with the content of feeds, showing some people more positive content and others more negative posts, and studied how that impacted the emotions and posts of those users.
One of the most frustrating parts of the company's controlling approach to the news feed is how difficult it is to customize what you do see. There are options for muting individuals or blocking posts from certain sites, but with hundreds of friends, managing what pops up can be a full-time job.
These new settings, available on desktop now and coming to the mobile apps over the next few weeks, is an attempt to make surfing your feed less work.

Major Android releases are always eagerly anticipated, which makes being stuck on an outdated version because your phone manufacturer doesn't plan on releasing an update even more frustrating. We've listed every major manufacturer's official position on Lollipop below, and while it's good news for HTC, Motorola and Sony, it's grim reading for Samsung and LG.

THE VOCAL

HTC has pledged to update both the current HTC One (m8) and last year's One (m7) within 90 days of receiving the Lollipop source code from Google. Considering that code was made available on the 17th of October, that means HTC customers should get an update by the 15th of January at the latest – assuming mobile phone networks don't slow down the process. The HTC One Mini and One Mini 2 will eventually get Lollipop too, but likely at a later date.
Motorola's strong ties to Google means it will almost certainly be the first manufacturer to get Lollipop updates on to customers' phones. It has promised to upgrade the original and 2nd generation Moto X (2014), the original and second generation Moto G (2014), and the Moto E, as well as the older DROID Ultra, DROID Maxx and DROID Mini, although there's no exact date for release yet.

Sony has made big promises for Lollipop; it plans to bring the update to every phone in the Z series, going back as far as the original Xperia Z. The rollout will begin with the more recent Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 devices starting early 2015, then eventually filter down the Z1 range and older Z-series devices.
LG has also confirmed via Twitter that G3 owners can expect an upgrade to Lollipop some time during the last quarter of 2014. LG also hinted that the G2 may be receiving an update to Lollipop as well, but said the company "didn't have an exact schedule for the G2 just yet" and that G2 owners should "stay tuned for more updates". Meanwhile, the G Pad 8.3 will be updated alongside Google's own Nexus range, but there's no news on when.

THE SILENT

There's been no official statement from Samsung regarding Lollipop, meaning the only confirmed phone due for an update the Google Play Edition version of last year's Galaxy S4. It should get it in the next few weeks. Despite the silence, it's safe to assume the current crop of available handsets, including the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 will get an update eventually: according to Sammobile, both will get Lollipop in November.

Although there's now only a few weeks more to wait before the official OTA release of Lollipop, there's nothing stopping you getting it today - if you own a Nexus 5 or Nexus 7, and you're prepared to get your hands dirty. The Android 5.0 Lollipop developer preview is available to download right now, for free. With a bit of fiddling you can even install it on handsets from third party manufacturers; there's already a custom ROM for the HTC One (m7) and others are appearing every day on the XDA Developer forums. However, if you aren't already confident with firmware flashing and custom ROMs we'd recommend waiting, to avoid bricking your handset.

Android 5.0 Lollipop has over 5,000 new APIs ticking away behind the scenes, but the most obvious changes will always be the visual ones. The new 'Material Design' scheme is set to appear on every Google platform, not just Android. Apparently Google drew inspiration from pens and inks, with every icon and user interface element casting an accurate shadow to give a sense of depth. Everything animates as you touch it, with objects flying into view and tapped icons rippling like puddle.

The home screen, lock screen, settings pull-down menu, main settings page and even the onscreen navigation buttons have received a makeover. Lollipop will also include new system widgets to match the design scheme. Finally, every Google app will be redesigned to match the new look, with some having already been upgraded in time for the developer preview release. More apps are being updated every week, with Google Play Music being one of the latest - it joins Gmail, Google+, Google Play Newstand and Chrome, but we're still waiting on other Google apps to join the ranks.
The notifications system has been completely overhauled for Lollipop as well. Currently, Android users have to unlock their device to check, respond to or dismiss notifications, but with Android L they will be able to do this from the lock screen. They will appear as a stack of Google Now-like cards, which can be scrolled through rather than flooding the screen. Each one has an in-line preview, giving context.

Android 5.0 Lollipop features

Lollipop isn't all about looks; it will also include lots of clever new features. Personalised unlocking is one of our favourites. Essentially it makes your smartphone or tablet search for familiar Bluetooth gadgets, Wi-Fi networks, locations and even voice imprints to deactivate any lockscreen protections, letting you jump straight into your phone when it knows you're nearby. If the device can't detect any of these metrics, anyone trying to use it will be presented with the standard lockscreen.
The recent apps page will become the recent content page, displaying all your content in one list of Google Now-styled cards. You'll be able to jump between apps and the web, with links in Google search results jumping straight from the browser into the relevant part of an app. Although not strictly built into Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google will also be giving its mobile webpages and search an overhaul in time for its release. The Material Design will be carried across, along with smooth animations and a slicker interface.
Google will be updating its stock Android keyboard for Android 5.0 Lollipop, adding more personalisation and scrapping the individual tiled keys - instead each letter will sit on a flat background, which should make it easier for those with larger fingers and thumbs to type quickly. Also set to arrive are a Do No Disturb mode, which automatically deactivates all notifications and audio during set times, support for Bluetooth 4.1 and a completely redesigned Audio backend with support for USB audio devices.

The biggest back-end change is the move from the Dalvik runtime to ART. Part of the operating system at a basic level, the ART runtime supports ARM, x86 and MiPS instructions, and a mix of AOT, JIT and interpreted code. Essentially Android now speaks a lot more languages and will work on more CPUs than its predecessor. This alone could improve performance by as much as twofold over Dalvik, without developers making any code adjustments. So far we only have early benchmarks from the Nexus 9 tablets to give us any indication of performance, but it appears that Nvidia's Tegra K1 processor and Android Lollipop are a potent combination; it outpaced every single other Android tablet available by a considerable margin. If you want speed, Android Lollipop should give it to you.
DirectX 11-level graphics will finally make their way to Android using the Android extension pack. This set of APIs support advanced effects such as tessellation, geometry shaders, texture compression and compute shaders, and have the potential to put mobile devices on par with games consoles and PC games.

Google has concentrated on improving battery life in Lollipop with Project Volta. Similar to how Jelly Bean's Project Butter was an effort to make animations feel smoother and more responsive, Project Volta includes a new battery historian to better visualise battery discharge. This will help users work out what a device was doing at any given point in a battery cycle to find out which apps are draining the most power.
A battery saver mode will be included in stock Android for the first time with Lollipop, after being a common tweak for third party manufacturers. It will activate automatically when your battery drops below a certain percentage, downclocking the CPU, disabling extra features like location reporting and dimming the display. Google says a Nexus 5 running Lollipop gets around 90 minutes of extra use over the course of a typical day, without actually changing how a customer uses their phone.

Nvidia laptop with Maxwell GPU inside Today, Nvidia is unveiling the GTX 980M and GTX 970M — the first high-end mobile parts based on the new GM204 Maxwell GPU core. While Maxwell’s awesome power efficiency is certainly a nice quality for desktop PCs, higher efficiency and lower TDPs truly come into their own when mobile form factors with smaller thermal envelopes are considered. With the Maxwell-based mobile GPUs, Nvidia is claiming that the 980M now has 75% the performance of its desktop counterpart — meaning there are now laptops that are truly capable of high-fps 1080p gaming. Nvidia even says the GTX 980M and 970M are capable of playing “most games” at 2560×1440 with Ultra settings — but we’d like to actually see that in practice. OEM laptops with the 980M and 970M GPUs are available today, including the Asus G751 and MSI GT72.
First, the speeds and feeds. The GTX 980M and 970M appear to both be based on the GM204 Maxwell chip. While the full-fat GM204 (present in the desktop GTX 980 part) has 2048 CUDA cores, the GTX 980M has 1536 and the 970M has 1280. Presumably while the desktop part has a full complement of 16 Maxwell Streaming Multiprocessors (SMMs), the mobile parts only have 12 and 10 respectively. Other aspects of the GM204 appear to be fully present in the mobile parts, however: Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR), MFAA, and Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI) are all there.

Because the GTX 980M and 970M are mobile parts, there’s also an updated version of BatteryBoost — and if your laptop has an integrated Intel GPU as well, seamless switching with Optimus is still available.

Much like the desktop Maxwell-based chips, Nvidia is claiming that the 980M and 970M have 40% better performance-per-core and 100% (2x) better performance-per-watt over Kepler-based parts (the 680M and 670M). Because of these increased efficiencies, the mobile 980M manages 75% the performance of the desktop GTX 980; the 680M, by comparison, only managed 60% the performance of the desktop GTX 680. While the 680M could only manage 1344 CUDA cores, Maxwell’s increased efficiencies allow Nvidia to squeeze 1536 CUDA cores into the 980M.

Anyway, the end result — at least according to Nvidia, but we don’t really have a reason to doubt these figures — is a mobile GPU that can play all current-gen games at 1080p on Ultra settings, and post decent frame rates (~30 fps I guess) at 2560×1440 as well. BatteryBoost, plus Maxwell’s improved power efficiency, means decent performance is possible when on battery power, too. Thanks to Maxwell’s new technologies like DSR and VXGI, games will also look better on laptops powered by the 980M or 970M, too — especially after DirectX 12 arrives.

Nvidia says that eight OEM laptops are available immediately, with most of them offering a choice of the GTX 980M or 970M graphics card. Most notable are probably the 17-inch Asus Rog G751 and MSI GT72 — but if money is no object, and you want mobile gaming rig that really does have comparable graphics performance as your desktop PC, the 17-inch Gigabyte Aorus X7 now has the option of 2x GTX 970M in SLI mode.
